The author considers virtual reality as an archaic impulse/desire for a spatial, almost tangible reality, in contrast to the two-dimensional frame-picture, photography, film-invoking a much more radical dematerialization and virtualization at the level of imagination. Virtual worlds give everything " out of frame " and are conceived as an exalting regression and direct spatial unfolding of sensations despite the technological dimension of this medium. According to the author, virtual reality is closer in spirit and functioning to archaic arts such as ceramics or ritual complexes.
In 2000 and 2002 Nikolay Konstantinov worked as 3D art director on the feature-length documentary Orpheus, a virtual museum of Bulgarian archaeological heritage. Out of this far back in time experience of months spent in the archaeological museum among a fabulous amount of treasures, one of this year's installations was born, mixing virtual reality and ceramics, entitled " 1624 sparks of amazement ".
